Indian Traditional POTTERY is a remarkable tradition of religious Dravidian culture… as we know that as a part of village architecture, as a wall decorative element and, today, it finds extension with its contemporary form for landscaping & Interior decoration….even in 21st century . its aesthetics retains is its typical freshness and earthy flavour. The mud is shaped a world of tradition, custom and heritage that is simply passed on from one generation to the next. The customs and beliefs stand tall and go on undisturbed for centuries with minimal alterations and innovations.out all these fact we Indians really love the beati of this wonderfull art form
PUTHUKOTTAI
Capital of the only princely state of Tamilnadu during the
British time (1686 to 1948) and presently district headquarters. One of the
planned towns of India. Home of one among the earliest cave temples (about 1300
years old) with a continuous traditions till date. A notable centre for arts
and temple architecture during the period of royalty. The Government Museum,
the palace and impressive public buildings are a few other attractions.

The story of Ayyanar pottery …
The
skill to shape these objects using clay is a testament to the skills of the
maker. What I have understood and gleaned is a small drop in the ocean of this
age old tradition Walking past it would transport me to a typical village known
as Puthukottai in Tamil
Nadu and
its root end with Ayyanar family. What we understood was, this wonderful art
forms transformed the beauty of the Ayyanar
figurines, their culture, traditions religious beliefs the insight of folk-aesthetic
qualities, beautiful expressions,
tremendous skill with pottery making skils with their traditional tools….here ,.
The Ayyannar tradition of pottery
carring us in the magical world of the ancient crafts ….we hope that the
budding talents of Jawahar navodadaya vidyalaya students will carry the seeds of this rich tradition to the
future….
About R .Meyyar
( Chief Guru)
R Meyyar, is an extra ordinary craft man
who keeps the origine of this pottery
tradition … who has been in the profession for more than 25 years. It is a
skill practiced by his father and grandfather, handed down in the family and
Meyyar is a proud bearer of the heritage. Meyyar takes pride in this hereditary
skill, a pride not common among descendants of craftsmen.
He adds, "only people from our community can do it.
Outsiders will not be able to learn it. They can spend time on it, but they
find it difficult to learn the intricacies. It is something inborn in us. It
comes to us naturally." As he begins to expound, it becomes abundantly
clear that, though the craft may seem easy to them, it is painstakingly done,
using hard lab our as only the most basic of tools is used. Every operation is
manual with absolutely no use of any mechanical or electrical tool. This craft
is popular in the Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu, Meyyar hails from
Mazhaiyur in Pudukkottai district. His father Rengaswamy has learnt from his
grandfather. How many years has this craft been with the family, no one knows.
Some put the ancientness of the craft to more than 400 years old or more.
The objective of the training is to ensure early identification of talents and nurturing them.” The training is on five fields-making of terracotta toys, Land Sc aping , Mural Painting Painting, Teracotta toys etc. and chalk piece-and the students chose the specific branch dear to them, says Art Teacher V.S. sajikumar JNV Trivandrum Co-ordinator of the workshop
R. Meyyar, the resource person for
terracotta toys, says that the students evinced keen interest in learning this
traditional art Meyyar tells…,
"I have learnt the craft since childhood watching my father and
grandfather do it. It is a hereditary craft and is in our blood and genes. An
outsider if he struggles a lot can learn it but he will find it extremely
difficult. It comes to us naturally."
We adopted simple techniques to
impart the training on making the toys of horse, elephant, and Persian lamps. Artist G
azhikkode , Contemporary Artist Sajitha R Shankar , Ratheesh College of
Fine arts Trivandrum , Pratheep etc. are the resource persons for taking classes for more about the importance of traditional arts and its
importance in the contemporary
generation..

The Putukottai terracotta workshop was Inaugurated by the famous sculptor Artist Vijayakumar G Kumarapuram , vidyalaya principal Dr. K.O. Rathnakaran preside over the function ,Mr Satheeshkumar PGT Physics, given the wecome speach, followed by Honoring guru Guruvandanan Mr. sajaykumar P.S & Anu S Balan co-ordinated the Guruvandanam programme in a memmorable manner, Felicitation speech by Kulakkada Pratheep given a class about mud house and living experience of his own mud house followed by Art Teacher V.S. Sajikumar co-ordinator given the voteof thanks . 60 students
paticipated in the programe and they are given systematic training given
by the Chief guru Mr R Meyyar and his Asst Mrs. Chellam Meyyam. The resource persons for taking classes for more about the importance of traditional arts and its
importance in the contemporary
generation..
We hope that the young boys and girls are getting wonderful exposure thrugh this terracotta woukshop during the 10 days
training is a special Art in education programme by the Navodaya
